What We Mean by a “Standard Clean” (and Why It’s Important to Tell Us If Yours Isn’t)

When booking professional carpet cleaning, you’ll often hear the term “standard clean.” But what does that actually mean — and why do we always ask a few questions before your booking is confirmed?

Being upfront about the condition of your carpets helps us give you accurate pricing, the right equipment, and the best possible results on the day.

Here’s a clear breakdown.

What Is a Standard Carpet Clean?

A standard clean refers to carpets that have light to medium soiling from everyday living. This is the most common type of clean we perform and is ideal for homes or offices that are regularly maintained.

A standard clean typically includes:

  • Light to medium dirt and traffic marks

  • General dust and soil build-up

  • Routine freshening of carpets

  • Hot water extraction (steam cleaning) using professional equipment

A standard clean does not involve:

  • Large or excessive liquid spills

  • Heavy staining or set-in stains

  • Pet urine contamination or heavy pet fur build-up

  • Faeces, vomit, mould, or biohazards

  • Blue tac, slime or nail polish

  • Flood damage or water saturation

  • Specialty stain treatments beyond the normal hot water extraction process

  • Moving large or heavy furniture

In short, if your carpets look “lived on” but not heavily damaged or contaminated, they usually fall into the standard clean category.

Why Stains Aren’t Included in a Standard Clean

Many stains do not respond to normal hot water extraction alone. Things like:

  • Old food or drink stains

  • Dye stains

  • Pet urine stains

  • Rust, paint, or chemical marks

These often require specialist treatments, extra time, and additional products — and sometimes multiple attempts. Because of this, stain treatment is not included in a standard clean unless discussed beforehand.

We’re always happy to attempt stain removal, but it’s important to understand that not all stains can be fully removed, even with professional treatment.

Why It’s Important to Tell Us If Your Clean Isn’t “Standard”

We never ask questions to make things difficult — we ask so we can do the job properly.

If we arrive expecting a standard clean but the carpets are heavily soiled or contaminated, it can lead to:

  • Extra time on site

  • Additional treatments being required

  • A change in pricing

  • Delays for other booked customers

By telling us upfront if there are pet accidents, heavy staining, excessive fur, or major spills, we can:

✔ Allow the correct amount of time

✔ Bring the right products and equipment

✔ Give you an accurate quote

✔ Deliver the best possible result

No surprises — for you or us.

Honesty Gets You Better Results

We’re not here to judge — we’re here to help. Carpets take a beating, especially in busy households with kids, pets, or rental turnovers.

The more we know before we arrive, the better the outcome will be.

If you’re unsure whether your carpets fall under a standard clean, just let us know what’s going on. We’ll happily talk it through and recommend the most suitable service.

Book With Confidence

A standard clean is perfect for regular maintenance and general refreshes. For anything beyond that, we’ll make sure you’re fully informed and comfortable before work begins.
